Like every school going kid I too had a desire to sleep for long on Sundays. But this desire of mine was shattered as a burdened, painful and melancholic old voice used to reach my ears early in the morning which was enough to wake me up. The voice was of no one other than of my old washer man. I asked my mother, ' Can't he come a little bit late? ' She said, ' its not possible as he has to deliver clothes at many places'. As I grew up I realised it was not only the heap of clothes which made his voice burdened, but the death of his only young daughter due to survical Cancer made his voice melancholic and the malfunctioning of his kidneys made his situation more miserable.Above all he had to look after his grandson who was born from his daughter. Willingly or unwillingly I got the habit of waking up early even on Sunday Mornings.
Gradually his situation deteriorated. The doctors suggested him to go for dialysis but his financial situation was not good enough to get it done at a Private Hospital. We made arrangements to get him shifted to PMCH ( Patna Medical College Hospital). He eventually died during the mid way. What was his fault? Poverty ? Certainly Yes. At almost the same time the then Prime Minister of our country Mr. A.B. Vajpayee underwent through a knee surgery in one of the costliest hospitals of our country Breach Candy Hospital. An Indian Born Hip Surgeon from US Dr,Chittranajan Ranawat was called to do his surgery. Crores of money were spent just to make sure that our beloved PM's knees get fine. And the saga further continued with Mrs. Sonia Gandhi getting her treatment for Cancer done in US, Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh getting his treatment done in one of the liver speciality hospitals in Chennai and last not the least MP Shatrughan Sinha spending an entire month in one of the hospitals in Mumbai just for the sake of regular of observation. In all the above mentioned cases the expenses were undertaken by the government.
I have no objections if these people get the best possible medical treatment, but my question is from the government health system is why can't a common man gets the same treatment ? Why can't we get proper treatment at state run hospitals? Why does a citizen prefers a Private Hospital ahead of Government Hospitals. AIIMS one of the best state owned hospitals in India. If you want to get treated there you have to go through an everlasting queue. You have to look for sifarish from a neta or a minister to get your treatment done at a quicker pace than normal. Its very disappointing to know that in TMH if you are looking for cancer treatment for free you have to wait for months over there or in other words you have to wait for the patient to die. But if you have some lakhs to spend things could become much easier for you. In India health and medical care synonyms with hassles. Our netas talk about socialism? Why no socialism in our health system? Does socialism only stands in India with reservations in jobs and education based on caste and religious lines ?
One must say simply abusing the system is not going to help. But I would rather say there are certain ways which could help the poor people in getting proper medical treatment like providng health cards for a few hundred rupees for every citizen which could get more and more health facilities for citizens. Reducing the queues in hospitals by constructing more and more Government hospitals. Government should concentrate on constructing Speciality Hospitals. Doing these stuffs is not a rocket Science for our government. But either they are simply not concerned for the health and welfare of a common man or they lack the will power hard to understand.
